The new national standard for automotive steering systems has been released, driving the in-depth development of automotive intelligence.

2026-01-23

In late January, the website of the State Administration for Market Regulation (National Standardization Management Committee) showed that the mandatory national standard "Basic Requirements for Automotive Steering Systems" (GB 17675—2025), drafted under the leadership of SAIC Motor Corporation Limited, has been approved and released, and will officially come into effect on July 1, 2026.

This standard clarifies the technical requirements and test methods for automotive steering systems and is the second revision since its initial release in 1999. This revision focuses on two main aspects: first, it adds failure degradation requirements, alarm requirements, and functional safety requirements for steer-by-wire systems, defining clear safety boundaries for steer-by-wire; second, it revises the functional safety requirements for traditional steering systems and auxiliary steering devices, further guiding the iterative progress of steering technology.

This revision further strengthens the safety assurance of traditional steering and rear-wheel steering, and also defines safety boundaries for new technologies such as steer-by-wire. At the same time, this revision also coordinates with relevant national standards for brake-by-wire in terms of terminology and definitions, ensuring consistent industry understanding of related components and laying a standard foundation for the coordinated control of steering and braking systems and the integrated development of intelligent chassis. In the future, this standard will continue to lead the iterative upgrade of automotive steering systems towards electrification and intelligence.
